Wall sound insulation: measure, assess and improve.
A wall that transmits sound is a common problem, especially in older homes with single brick walls or lightweight separating constructions. But also in new construction we regularly encounter walls that do not meet the requirements due to construction errors, unsealed penetrations or incorrectly applied materials.

Insulation is determined by three factors: mass (the heavier the wall, the more sound it stops), airtightness (every gap is a sound leak) and decoupling (vibrations must not be conducted through rigid connections). A concrete wall of 200 mm provides Rw around 52 dB. A single brick wall of 100 mm achieves only Rw 42 dB. A lightweight plasterboard wall can be even lower.

Common defects in party walls
Unsealed penetrations for electrical and pipework: every 1 cm² opening can worsen the insulation by 10 dB. Metal battening acting as a sound bridge. Insufficient mineral wool in the cavity. Flanking transmission via the floor-wall connection. Back-to-back socket boxes forming a direct opening through the wall. We systematically identify these defects during inspection.
Our approach: measure first, advise second
We measure the airborne sound insulation (DnT,A) compliant with NEN 5077. After measurement we advise on the most effective improvement: from simply sealing gaps and penetrations (cheap and often surprisingly effective) to installing a free-standing lining wall with separate battening, mineral wool and double plasterboard (maximum improvement of 10-15 dB). We specify materials, thicknesses and detailing.
Lining wall: when and how?
A lining wall on separate battening (no contact with the existing wall) with 50 mm mineral wool and double 12.5 mm plasterboard can improve the insulation by 10 to 15 dB. Crucially, the lining wall must be fully decoupled: no rigid connections to floor, ceiling or side walls. A wooden batten against the wall as battening is a common mistake that largely undoes the improvement. We guide the execution.
