Ceiling sound insulation: measure and improve.

Noise from upstairs is one of the most difficult problems to solve, especially when the upstairs neighbours do not cooperate with floor measures. Ceiling insulation is then the only option from your own home. But a poorly executed suspended ceiling can even make the problem worse.

Why doesn't a simple suspended ceiling work?

A thin suspended ceiling with only a single layer of plasterboard has virtually no effect on impact noise. At certain frequencies it can even worsen things due to resonance (the mass-spring-mass effect then works against you). Effective ceiling insulation requires sufficient cavity depth (at least 50 mm, preferably more), filling with mineral wool, sufficient mass (double or triple plasterboard) and full decoupling via a self-supporting suspension system with spring brackets. No rigid connections.

The right diagnosis: impact or airborne noise?

We first measure which type of noise is dominant. Where impact noise dominates (footsteps, banging) a self-supporting ceiling with mass is the best option. Where airborne noise dominates (voices, music) a combination of mass and absorption can be more effective. Without measuring first you risk an investment that does not address the real problem.

Alternatives and combinations

When upstairs neighbours cooperate a floor measure from above is often more effective and cheaper. The best results are achieved with a combination of floor and ceiling measures. We always advise the most cost-effective approach, product-neutral and based on measurement data.

Practical considerations for ceiling insulation

An effective suspended ceiling costs about 8-12 cm of height. In homes with limited ceiling height (below 2.60 m) this can be a problem. The work usually takes 2-5 days per room. We discuss in advance the practical feasibility, the expected improvement in dB and the costs, so you can make an informed choice.
