Floor sound insulation: measure and choose the right solution.

The floor is the weakest link for impact noise in most apartments. Laminate, parquet or tiles without an adequate underlay can worsen the impact noise level by 10 to 20 dB compared to carpet. That difference is perceived as a doubling of loudness. A common source of neighbour conflicts.

Laboratory values versus reality

Underlay manufacturers advertise lab values ("19 dB improvement" or "22 dB impact noise reduction"). In practice this always falls lower due to flanking sound transmission via walls and columns, careless installation and divergent constructions. The actual improvement is usually 30 to 50% lower than the lab value. An underlay that achieves 22 dB in the lab will only deliver 11 to 15 dB in practice. Precisely for that reason a measurement in your home is essential.

Effective floor measures by order of effectiveness

A completely new floating screed on an acoustic insulation layer: most effective, about 10-25 dB improvement depending on the construction. An acoustic underlay below laminate or parquet: simpler but less effective, about 5-15 dB. Carpet with a thick underlay: the simplest measure but often not desired. The choice depends on the type of construction (concrete or timber), the available build-up height, the budget and the preferred floor covering.

Our approach: product-neutral advice

We measure LnT,A and DnT,A compliant with NEN 5077. Based on the frequency analysis we advise which solution is effective. We do not sell materials and have no interest in a specific product. We specify materials and thicknesses so the contractor knows exactly what is needed.

What to watch for in an underlay?

The thickness and type of material must match the construction. An underlay that works well on concrete may be less effective on a timber joist floor. The connection to walls must be decoupled with edge insulation. Skirtings must not be screwed onto the floating floor but fixed to the wall. We specify everything in detail to prevent installation errors.
