Reverberation: measure and improve for a comfortable environment.

Reverberation is sound persisting in a room after the source stops. Excessive reverberation time leads to poor speech intelligibility, fatigue, concentration problems and an uncomfortable indoor climate. This applies to offices, meeting rooms, restaurants, schools, sports facilities and homes with hard surfaces.

What is reverberation time (T60)?

The reverberation time T60 is the time required for the sound level to decrease by 60 dB after the source stops. The longer the T60, the more reverberation and the poorer the intelligibility. The desired reverberation time depends on the use: for speech (office, meeting room) 0.5-0.8 seconds is ideal, for music (concert hall) 1.5-2.0 seconds is desired, for education a maximum of 0.8 seconds applies under the Building Decree.

Our approach to reverberation problems

We measure the reverberation time (T60 or T30) with a Class 1 sound level meter and calculate how many square metres of absorption material are needed and where it is best placed (ceiling, walls or as a free-standing element). We advise on the right type of material: porous absorbers for high frequencies (foam, textile), resonance absorbers for low frequencies (membrane panels) or a combination.

Common applications

Open offices and meeting rooms where conversations become unintelligible. Restaurants and cafés where guests gradually speak louder (the Lombard effect). Schools and childcare centres where children get tired from the high noise level. Sports facilities with concrete walls and floors. Homes with large glass walls, concrete floors and a minimalist interior. Churches and auditoria with long reverberation times.
